The fifth Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival will kick off tomorrow at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. Included in the Regional Short Films are the following entries from Mindanao:
A STEP FOR MY DREAM by Mona Labado (Maguindanao), ANG PAGHAHANAP NI BATUGAN SA BAKANG IBINAON SA BUNDOK(Work-In-Progress) by Gutierrez Mangansakan II, ANGAN-ANGAN by Sheron Dayoc (Zamboanga), BINITON by Mc Robert Nacario (Maguindanao), KASING-KASING AMANG by Shaun Uy (Cagayan De Oro) and WINDOWS OF DREAMS by Ma. Rosalie Zerrudo (Cagayan De Oro). ANOD by Zerich Bordios (Davao), BOMBDROP by Arnel Barbarona, EGAY by Erleen Bendisula (Davao), TAKIPSILIM by Herman Candelaria (Davao) and an excerpt from TATLONG MUKHA NG BUHAY (Episode 3: Ang Kabanata Sa Buhay Ni Abelardo Macaspac III) by Marichelle De Ramos (Davao).
Among the featured films under the competition category, I am most interested in watching Pepe Diokno’s Engkwentro. The story almost mimics the vigilante killings by a Death Squad in Davao City. The film may just be another powerful medium in mainstreaming the issue of extrajudicial killings amidst the investigation currently being conducted by the commission on Human Rights.
Cinemalaya runs until July 26, 2009. Films will be shown at all CCP venues, namely the Main Theater, the Little Theater, Dream Theater, Tanghalang Huseng Batute, Silangan Hall and the MKP Hall.
Cinemalaya Cinco is presented by the Cinemalaya Foundation, Cultural Center of the Philippines, the Film Development Council of the Philippines and Econolink Investments Inc. Cinemalaya is an all-digital film competition aimed at discovering new Filipino filmmakers.
